Transitioning your puppy to their new home…
Transitioning your puppy home…
First few weeks:
They might cry and seem sad to you when you first bring your puppy home. This is totally normal for the first couple days or so. They might miss their mommy and siblings.
One thing you can do is get a warm water bottle and put a warm fuzzy sock on it. Putting it next to the puppy creates a sense of security that one of their brothers or sisters are still next to them while they are getting acquainted with their new home.
Before bedtime make sure to play a lot with your puppy so they are exhausted and can sleep through the night.
Keep the area clean and wash your hands when you handle your new baby. Keep company to a minimum your baby needs to learn his new family and environment.
Keep all other pets that do not live with you away from your house until your puppy is fully vaccinated.
Do not take your baby outside until they are fully vaccinated.
Take your shoes off at the door, shoes can carry diseases such as parvo, do not let your puppy play with your shoes.
Limit the area your puppy can explore you do not want potty accidents make sure the “puppy area is clean at all times and free of debris.
FEEDING
I am feeding them three times a day, 1/3 of a cup total for the day. Please refer to the back of the food package for accurate serving size.
Overeating can cause diarrhea and soft stool.
If the babies are still acting hungry you can give them a little bit more food but this is what they’re used to.
Puppy treats - I recommend you give your puppy 1/3 of a treat. You can use these for potty training rewards, good behavior or training your puppy. You can also use puppy kibble.
POTTY TRAINING
All puppies are potty pad trained when they go to their new homes. Remember the puppies are still learning mistakes happen. You will need to continue the work I started until your puppy is 100% pad trained.
The two potty pad recommendation I love have a scent and they don’t shred apart. Costco and American Kennel Club Training Pads.
Roll up area rugs until your baby is completely potty pad trained.
As soon as the baby wakes up from a nap, put him/her on the potty pad in the designated place you have chosen (i.e. office, bathroom with no carpet ) , keep them in the area until they go potty.
Make sure and give them a treat when they go potty on the pad and make a big deal ( praise them)
I like to keep a dirty potty pad underneath the clean one so they know where to go when they first go to their new homes.
You can open up the playpen when they are out playing so they have access to their potty pad or leave potty pad on the outside of the playpen.
